HomeI can remember when I became pregnant with my son and how incredibly excited I was to be having a baby. Little did I know that my life was about to change forever. I had absolutely no concept of what it would be like to be responsible for another little human being. I went through the pregnancy with complete naiveté of what was to come and how things were going to change. Even so I think that probably I changed more than anything else. The magnitude to which my thinking changed, my very thought process morphed into this responsible practical person that I did not even know existed within me. I took my new role very seriously.
Upon his arrival of course our home was turned upside down in a way that only a new baby can do. I had actually planned before his birth this list of accomplishments that were going to happen while I was on maternity leave and at home with the baby. It was only a few days before I realized that just getting a shower was a major accomplishment. It was time to go back to work before I knew it and thus we rolled into our new life with this incredible new addition. My metamorphosis had occurred without my even realizing it.
Suddenly you start to think about a college fund for your new baby, retirement funds, life insurance and trust funds in case something happens to you. All of these had not seriously entered my mind until my first born. His father and I had lived a very easy life with two incomes and nothing to spend our money on except ourselves but suddenly we realized that we should have been putting more of our funds away for planning of our future. Once again a lack of financial education raises its ugly head in America. We knew that change was going to be difficult but that it had to happen. A new challenge entered my life just two years ago when the bottom fell out of the market and the economy went south. My income from real estate dried up and I had two teenagers to support.
